The Baisha Liquor Culture Can Be Traced Back to the Ming Dynasty

Nov.20,2017

Jiangjin liquor culture has a long history and can date back to the Ming Dynasty .

According to the records of Jiangjin County Annals, Zhao Xi, a poet of late Qing Dynasty, walked down the river and smelled the aroma of Baisha liquor ten miles from Baisha Twon, thus making poetry praising: “There are five hundred houses enveloped in mist, all farmers are beautiful and liquor are piled high. Since it is of great distance to Lueyang, I cherish my Maotai, and the title of liquor county and spring city shall give Baisha. ” Shuhai Congtan contains: “Baisha, a famous giant town in Sichuan Province, produces the abundant liquors; since merchants gathered here, Baisha served as a channel for selling salt from Sichuan to Guizhou”.

Baisha Liquor is also famous from an old liquor-making Caofang Street.

The Baisha Liquor has a well-deserved reputation for it benefits from the fact that there was once a old Caofang Street specializing in liquormaking. In the early Qing Dynasty, there were more than 300 distilleries in Baisha Town. During the reign of Qing Emperor Qianlong, Caofang (distillery) industry was well-developed, forming the liquor-making distillery with a length of approximately one li, and Baisha “Caofang Street” got its name.

A fire on September 2, 1934 turned the old Caofang Street of Baisha Town (famous in Sichuan Province) into ashes. Although the old Caofang Street are no longer there, the soul of Baisha Liquor remains. The liquor produced in the Lvxi Distillery in the territory is named after the “Lvxi” caofang street and was also rated as“Chongqing Municipal Intangible Culture Heritage”.

Baisha liquor culture will be subject to integrated creation    Jiangxiaobai makesinvestment to create a Jiangxiaobai village.

In October this year, at the third-quarter signing ceremony of Jiangjin District, Jiangxiaobai signed a contract with Baisha Industrial Park and plans to invest 2.2 billion yuan to the production of sorghum production base in Baisha Ancient Town.  At present, there are still famous white liquor brands in Baisha Town such as Jiangxiaobai, Caofang Street, Gandage and Heishishan. The key projects including Jiangxiaobai Village are being constructed. The future Baisha Town will re-blow the strong wind of“Baisha Liquor”.
