First Ever Baijiu Judge at the HKIWSC

Aug.27,2019
Meet the first ever VIP Judge for baijiu of the Hong Kong IWSC, JIANGXIAOBAI’s deputy chief engineer Ms. Wu Yi

On August 26th, the 2019 Hong Kong International Wine and Spirits Competition (HKIWSC) Judge Week took place in Hong Kong. Vice President of JIANGXIAOBAI’s Small Qu Light-Aroma Technology Department and deputy chief engineer, Ms. Wu Yi, was invited as VIP Judge. There she hosted a baijiu masterclass about the tasting techniques of baijiu to the on-site judges and spirit experts. Ms. Wu Yi is the first VIP Judge for baijiu of the HKIWSC and the first baijiu expert giving a master class at HKIWSC. In addition, she participated in the judging of the gin and brandy categories and provided technical guidance for the judging process in the baijiu category.

Since 2017, JIANGXIAOBAI has participated in the spirits section of the HKIWSC competition for three consecutive years. As a consequence, its products garnered a Trophy and Gold Medal, showing their quality and splendid taste, as well as the recognition by international professional judges. Moreover, this year’s invitation to Ms. Wu Yi to act as special judge is a further nod to the quality of JIANGXIAOBAI and its brand.

As one of the world’s major spirits, baijiu’s popularity in Hong Kong and even Asia is surprisingly low. Actually, in the professional spirits circle, the number of baijiu experts is comparatively limited. To initiate a potential trend reversal, Ms. Wu Yi first laid out the key points of baijiu tasting. Next, she continued to explain the production process of the traditional Chinese spirit, drawing the attentive interest of her colleague judges.

This year, HKIWSC received about 1,700 products from 33 countries for the competition. In comparison with last year, the number of Chinese baijiu brands increased by 44%. This development is possible because of the recent enthusiasm of Chinese baijiu brands for the global market.

Unlike the IWSC of UK, HKIWSC focuses on Asian wine and spirits brands, showcasing Asian products. The judges of HKIWSC are world-renowned wine and spirits experts from all over Asia and select and award international premium brands and products that resonate with the Asian market and its consumers. As a result, the event attracts many European and American brands interested in entering the Asian market.

Coming up next, the 2019 HKIWSC Awards Ceremony will take place in November in Hong Kong.
